Verizon’s Brave New World

Stephen Wellman contacted me the other day just after Verizon announced their new open wireless policy, and we had a brief conversation about what might come next; you can see this on his blog, at

Although Verizon is running a technology that doesn’t work in Europe (to the angst of Vodafone) or with many other U.S. carriers, an increasing number of phones are multi-transceiver, something apparently not obvious to some pundits covering the Verizon announcement. (Even my daughter now asks for world phones.)

Despite any short-term technical radio issues, I expect this announcement to spur handset makers to include Verizon-acceptance as part of their spec.

Next, we’ll have to see how quickly the carriers change management, and then, change themselves.
